Guerra & Partners Celebrates The 32nd Anniversary Of The Americans With Disabilities Act

Today is “ADA Day,” the 32nd anniversary of the U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act.  The law requires equal opportunity for people with disabilities.  Worldwide, it is estimated that 1 in 7 people, or 15% of the Earth’s population, suffers from some type of disability.  Some of the most common disabilities are depression, loss of hearing and sight, loss of mobility, and learning disabilities.  They’re not all visible but they are real.  Talking about disability can be tricky.  For a time, “differently abled” was an alternative term.  Now, some consider that term condescending, or a way of avoiding acknowledging disability.  Others emphasize viewing disability as a specific challenge faced by a whole person.  Stephen Hawking and Frida Kahlo had disabilities but still accomplished great things.  The people around us with disabilities are doing great things too, and you might not even know that their accomplishments are more difficult than for you or me.
